Single Family Spec
Photography: Doug Hill

This speculative house seeks a broad appeal by combining a primitive earthen enclosure with lighter structural elements forming a light-filled contemporary space with exploding distant views.

The design uses a series of tower-like boxes, which were guided by a combination of site topography and functional requirement and then rotated to orient the house toward views of downtown Los Angeles. The boxes are given thickness, rendered in a natural concrete material, and carved in a way appropriate with concrete construction. This base element anchors the house to the hillside.

Lighter wood elements then form the upper part of the house, reaching out toward the view, forming overhangs and connecting the house with the treetops.
